Calming ideas for travel with 9 lb. 1 yr old shih-tzu?
We have traveled twice with our shih-tzu on a 6 hour flight. We used baby benadryl as recommended by the vet. It did not seem to help much. In fact I have heard that with children it can make them more hyper. Our pooch is very used to being kenneled and yet on the airplane he was a bit anxious on take-off and landing. Fortunately I was able to hold his carrier on my lap on the flight and that calmed him and he slept the whole way. Any suggestions for calming a pooch down other than giving treats? We do not want to use any kind of drug due to the short nose breed that they are. We have used the HomeoPet travel anxiety drops and they didn’t seem to aid in reducing anxiety. Any good tips would be much appreciated! Thank you!
I have a shih tzu (AWESOME dogs!!). He was obviously a little scared since it isn't a regular activity. Have you tried Composure? It is a tastey liquid med that calms them down, my dog licks it up like a treat and there is no limit on how much you can give them. I use it during thunderstorms and it works very well. This breed of dog has anxiety tendencies anyway so there isn't much else besides using medicine. There is a type of drop medication that can sedate the dog but if you dont want to use it, then there isn't a whole lot. It seems that you found a good method putting his carrier on your lap. Its too bad you can't play with him on the plane because that always makes mine feel better. 
The goal is to get his attention off of what's going on so that he doesn't think about it and get nervous.
