benadryl and melatonin for dogs?
I just left the vet after getting my 3 month old pup his vaccines/boosters. I asked them about allergies and sleep aids and they said that benadryl is safe in the right dosages. THey also said that melatonin is safe for separation anxiety. Has anyone else used these OTC meds for anything?
I use Benadryl in the fall when my Setter's allergies act up. (1-2 mg per pound of body weight).
A 3-month old puppy won't likely have allergies, though. Allergies are caused by repeated exposures to something. Allergy usually develops around the second year, but rarely before 9 months or so. If the dog turns out to display symptoms of allergy consistently, have him tested for allergy, so you can either avoid the allergen or treat for it with immunotherapy.
A 3-month old pup shouldn't be displaying true separation anxiety yet, either. Simple training should resolve any displays of frustration at being left alone at this stage, and it should resolve permanently if you follow through with the techniques.
Basically, I feel your pup is too young to be diagnosing either condition, and would suggest you only resort to drug or supplement therapies after other options have been exhausted.
